WS Game Company Vintage Bookshelf Editions

Classic board games reissued as fabric-wrapped books that sit on a shelf. There are sixteen of them here, most between forty and fifty dollars, and each one is a proper edition rather than a smaller version of the game.

The format is the point. Each game comes in a box designed to look like a hardback book, with the board and components stored inside, so it can live among the books on a shelf rather than in a cupboard. The box is fabric-wrapped and measures around ten and a half by eight and a quarter inches, and the folded board stores inside it between plays.

The boards carry graphics based on the original editions. Scrabble follows the 1948 design and comes with a hundred wooden letter tiles, four racks, a fabric tile pouch, a score pad, a pencil and instructions. The same care goes into the rest of the range: Monopoly, Clue, Jenga, Battleship, Trivial Pursuit, Boggle, Catch Phrase, Connect 4, The Game of Life, Mystery Date and Candy Land, along with junior versions of Clue, Monopoly and Guess Who.

Because they are editions rather than replacements, they work as gifts for people who like games but would not buy a plastic box for themselves, and as a way of keeping a classic on a shelf where it gets played rather than forgotten.

Collecting them, alongside the book collection, has become a thing in itself. The spines are designed to sit together, and a shelf of four or five reads as a set rather than a pile of boxes.
