Skultuna
Skultuna has been casting brass in Sweden since 1607, when King Karl IX founded the works to reduce the country's reliance on imported metal. It is one of the oldest companies in the world still trading, and production has run without a break on the same site north of Västerås for more than four centuries.
Twenty-three of their pieces are here, from the smaller everyday objects up to the lidded boxes, which are the most expensive things we carry from the range. Everything is polished brass, and the weight is the first thing people notice when they pick one up.
The Lisa Larson pieces are the ones to look at if you want the story. Lisa Larson was one of the great Swedish ceramicists of the twentieth century, known for warm and slightly ironic animal figures, and she designed the lion, rabbit, cat and dog for Skultuna in brass shortly before her death in 2024. The resting lion is the most affordable of that group, and the cat, dog and lidded boxes sit at the top of the range.
There is also a collaboration with the Swedish illustrator Lukas Göthman, covering a monster head and a monster tray. The Ballerina bowl is designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune and has a rounded base that lets it tilt. The brass oval tray, the Barbara bottle opener, the wine and bottle opener and the Flora candlesnuffer are the more everyday pieces, and several of those come in under a hundred dollars.
Brass is one of the few materials that looks better as it ages. It dulls to a soft gold and then polishes back up, which is why these get bought as gifts for people who keep things rather than people who replace them.
A tray or a bottle opener is a way into the range without spending two hundred dollars, and either makes a present that will still be on the same desk in twenty years. If there is a particular Skultuna piece you are looking for that you are not able to find on the website, reach out to us and we will be glad to help.
