Scented Candles, Matches and Candle Holders

This collection covers the candle itself and everything that goes around it: matches, match strikers, snuffers and holders. Prices run from a box of matches under five dollars up to the three-wick porcelain pieces, with most candles sitting between twenty-five and eighty.

Nette makes up the largest part of the range. Their candles are hand poured in a coconut and soy wax blend, and the minis burn for forty to fifty hours while the larger eleven-ounce ones run to sixty. The scents are the draw: Pearl Dust, Midnight Strike, Guava Soda, Dream Land, Laide Tomate and Supernatural, some poured into drinking glasses and shot glasses meant to be kept and used once the wax is gone. The Magician is one of the most popular in the whole collection.

Apotheke and HomArt supply the classic and petite sizes. Those use a soy wax blend with essential and perfume-grade fragrance oils, and the vessels are pressed in specialty glass with a frosted interior that softens the light as the candle burns. The Norman Rockwell designs, in cardamom chestnut and juniper birch, are decorated with his artwork and burn for sixty to seventy hours. Flamingo Estate pours into vegetable wax with a cotton wick at eight ounces, in scents that run from heirloom tomato to Tuscan rosemary.

At the top of the range is the Médaille three-wick, cast in white bisque porcelain and finished with 24-karat gold-painted coins. The Grand Bazaar scent was composed by Yann Vasnier, and the vessel is designed to be kept and used as a decorative box afterwards.

The accessories matter as much as the candles. The matches come in designs including Love Letter, Fall Mushrooms and Pigeons and Parakeets, with coordinating tips. The handblown glass match strikers are made by glassblowers in Dallas and are one of a kind, so tone and size vary slightly. Helle Mardahl's candle holders come in mini, medi and mega and are organically shaped rather than symmetrical. Skultuna's Flora candlesnuffer, designed by Nick Ross, sits as a decorative object when it is not in use. The 1986 Megeve candle is poured into hand-painted glass with a sixty-hour burn.
