OOLY makes the things that keep a child busy for an afternoon, and most of the range sits under fifteen dollars, with the larger activity kits at the top. It is the brand to look at when you want something a child will use up rather than put on a shelf.

The markers and crayons are the core of it. The Calligraphy Duo set is twenty double-ended markers, with a fine tip on one end and a flexible brush tip on the other, washable and non-toxic and suitable from age six. The Switch-Eroo glitter markers work on the same trick: draw with the glitter end, then go over it with the mystery end and the colour changes. The Vivid Pop paint markers are the multi-surface ones, which stay on paper, cardboard, wood and rocks but wipe off glass and whiteboards with a cloth, so they are usable without covering the table first.

The watercolour range, which pairs with the paper in sketchbooks, is where OOLY gets more serious. The Chroma Blends brush pens are watercolour markers with synthetic bristle tips, and there are pearlescent sets that work on black paper, with a cover that doubles as a palette. The paper to match includes a circular pad, ten inches across, bound on all four sides so it does not warp, and the Lil' Watercolor Pad at twenty sheets of heavyweight acid-free paper that takes paint sticks and water-soluble crayons as well as watercolour.

The Shrink-Its kits are the sleeper hit. They come in pre-printed, colour-in and draw-your-own formats, need no scissors and no glue, and turn into charms in the oven, which makes them a reliable party favour or a rainy-afternoon project.

The smaller things fill out the range, sitting alongside kids activity kits: sticky tabs, origami sets that cover twenty-four designs, stacking crayons, three-hole pencil sharpeners and a Peanuts colouring kit.
