Helle Mardahl Glass and Porcelain

Helle Mardahl is a Danish designer working in mouth-blown glass and porcelain, and her pieces are some of the most collected things in the shop. Everything is made individually, which is why the shape and colour shift slightly from one piece to the next, and why no two are quite identical. The range here runs from the candle holders at the lower end up to the largest Bon Bon and Jar pieces.

The Bonbonniere is the signature. It is a lidded glass candy jar distinguished by its vibrant lid and fluid, organic form, and it was one of the first pieces Mardahl designed. Colours are named after the things they resemble rather than given numbers: Bubblegum and Spearmint, Peppermint and Apricot, Grapefruit and Lavender, Ice Blue and Lavender, Milky Rose and Caramel. It comes in three sizes, with the Mini, the full Bonbonniere and the Bon Bon Medi sitting either side of each other, and the largest Bon Bon holds a serious amount of sweets for a table.

The Dish Pair and The Pair are the smaller pieces. The Pair is three separate glass components that can be combined in different ways, and it works as salt and pepper bowls, as egg cups, or as somewhere to keep rings. The Dish Pair is two mouth-blown dishes, each one unique but made to sit together.

The candle holders come in mini, medi and mega, shaped organically and gently twisted rather than turned. They are designed around the idea that imperfection is part of the appeal, which is why the twist in each one differs.

The Jar Medi and the Jug with a Twist extend the range into storage and tableware, in the same candy palette, so a collection can be built across several pieces without repeating a colour. The rest of the glass and porcelain we carry sits alongside it.

One practical note: these are hand wash only. Lukewarm water, a little detergent, and wipe dry afterwards to avoid water stains, and keep them out of the dishwasher.

Because they are handmade, the piece that arrives will differ slightly from the photograph. That is not a fault, it is the point, and it is why they work as gifts for people who collect objects rather than buying sets.
