Christmas Ornaments and Keepsakes

Ornaments for a tree and for keeping. The range covers glass, silk, velvet, beaded and paper mache pieces, from small things that fill a gap between branches up to the keepsake ornaments people buy by name every year. Most sit under twenty-five dollars.

Our own line is the place to start. Every Little Something makes a Silk Fox and a Silk Horse each year as part of our exclusive ornament collection, and both are handmade in plush with a ribbon hang tag and a small brass oval tag carrying the shop's name. The fox comes in one colourway and the horse in maroon and blue. They are light enough to hang on a tree and considered enough to sit on a shelf or a mantelpiece all year, which is how most of them end up being used.

Elena Medina's paper mache pieces are the other house favourite. The hearts and gourds are handmade, hand painted and glittered with German glass, and each one has a Swiss velvet loop for hanging. Because they are made by hand, the piece that arrives will vary a little from the photograph, which is true of most of what is on this page.

The glass end, and the rest of the Christmas range, is where the volume is. Kurt S. Adler's Noble Gems range includes dinosaurs, hot air balloons, pencils, crayons, ice cream floats and glass peppermint candies, along with clip-on mushroom medallions. Old World Christmas adds the traditional shapes, from a French bulldog and a chocolate labrador to ballet toe shoes and a skating kitten. Transpac and Bethany Lowe cover the vintage-inspired designs, including jukebox glass balls and silver icicles.

The beaded butterflies are hand-beaded dupioni silk ovals finished with iridescent sequins and a metallic ribbon loop, and each arrives in a branded cotton bag. The velvet mushrooms come in bright colours and are the piece people buy two or three of at once.

If you are starting a collection, the useful approach is one keepsake a year rather than a box of matching baubles. Between our own silk pieces, the paper mache and the glass, there is enough variation here to build a tree that looks collected rather than bought in one go.
